Indians in Englisstaan!!

The UK today has 1.6 million people of Indian origin. The majority of Brit Indians are Punjabi and Gujrati.

The Indian population in London city is 501,600 which is 6.6% of the total population of London. Indians number over half a million in London, which is by far one of the city's largest non-white ethnic groups. Indians have a significant impact on the culture of the British capital.

Within London:
Southall, Hounslow, Brent, Croydon, Redbridge, Ealing, Barnet,
Tooting, Harrow and Wembley, the latter of which is one of the few places outside of India where Indians make up the largest ethnic group (almost 4 times larger than the indigenous White British population). There are more Indians in the British capital than in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy and Portugal combined.

Birmingham has 61,300 Indians which is 6.1% of the total population of the city.

Leicester is set to soon become the UK's first ethnic minority-majority city and Indians make up by far the largest ethnic group besides the White British. At 25.0% of the local population in 2007, Leicester has one of the highest percentages of Indians per head of the population of any local authority in the UK. According to the 2001 Census, Gujarati is the primary language of 16% of the city’s residents, 3% speak Punjabi as a primary language and 2% Urdu. Other smaller but common language groups include Hindi and Bengali.

Indians are so etched into mainstream Britain today that the richest Briton happens to be of Indian origin, Mr. Lakshmi Narayan Mittal, who sits on the throne of an international steel empire and is worth a whopping £10.8 billion.

Indo-British ties

Indian–British relations are foreign relations between India and the United
Kingdom.

India has a high commission in London and two consulates-general in Birmingham and Edinburgh. The United Kingdom has a high commission in New Delhi and three deputy high commissions in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

Both countries are full members of the Commonwealth of Nations. Since 1947, relations between the two countries have been mostly friendly and there are many areas in which both India and the UK seek stronger ties for mutual benefit. There are also strong cultural and social ties between the two nations.

In India, English is one of the official languages, and Cricket is among the most popular sports. In the UK, Indian Cuisine is hugely popular. The UK has an ethnic Indian population of over 1.6 million. Prime Minister David Cameron described Indian – British relations as the "New Special Relationship" in 2010.

India n Britain have long shared a bitter-sweet history since the past 3 centuries ever since the first contact between the British East India Company and the Indians. However since India gained independence from the brits in 1947... the relation between the 2 nations has largely been of mutual admiration and interest.

Three Presidents of India have paid state visits to the United Kingdom: Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in June 1963, Ramaswamy Venkataraman in October 1990, and Pratibha Patil in 2009.

HM Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom paid state visits to India in November 1963, and in April 1990

As of 2010, India is the second largest foreign investor in the UK after the USA, and the UK is also a significant investor in India. There are many bilateral trade agreements between the two nations designed to strengthen ties.

Indians in Amreeka ;)

As of 2010, the second largest INDIAN DIASPORA community lives in the USA!!

In North America the term Indian has an ambiguous meaning. Historically and currently, Indian was and is commonly used to indicate Native American. If a more specific term was or is needed, American Indian and East Indian were and are commonly used. American Indian is still the most common term, although Native American can be used to refer to the Indigenous peoples of North America. East Indian is still in common use. Currently South Asian is often used instead of East Indian. While some consider it derogatory, people of Indian origin use the term ‘Desito refer to the diasporic subculture of overseas Indians.

According to the American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau, the Asian Indian population in the United States grew from almost 1,679,000 in 2000 to 2,570,000 in 2007: a growth rate of 53%, the highest for any Asian American community, and among the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States. Indian Americans are the third largest Asian American ethnic group, after Chinese Americans and Filipino Americans.

The U.S. states with the largest Indian American populations, in order, are California, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and Illinois.
The town of Edison, New Jersey is 17.75% Indian American — the highest percentage of any municipality in the United States.

Indians are among the largest ethnic groups legally immigrating to the United States.  A major wave of immigration to California from the region of Punjab took place in the first decade of the 20th century. Another significant wave followed in the 1950s which mainly included students and professionals.

The elimination of immigration quotas in 1965 spurred successively larger waves of immigrants in the late 1970s and early 1980s. With the technology boom of the 1990s, the largest influx of Indians arrived between 1995 and 2000. This latter group has also caused surge in the application for various immigration benefits including applications for green card.

Today the American Indian community stands tall with their achievements in various fields.

Indo-American ties...

USA..."the land of OPPORTUNITY"..."the land of FREEDOM"..had always caught the fancy of Indians.

India as a nation has always had a luv-hate relation with the USA ever since Independence...luv because of the principles of Democracy that were first implemented in independent USA were also adopted by India upon independence.
The Americans have highest regard n respect for India because India is the WORLDS LARGEST DEMOCRACY.

After Indian independence until the end of the cold war, the relationship between the two nations has often been thorny. Dwight Eisenhower was the first U.S. President to visit India in 1959. He was so supportive of India that the New York Times remarked "It did not seem to matter much whether Nehru had actually requested or been given a guarantee that the U.S. would help India to meet further Chinese communist aggression. What mattered was the obvious strengthening of Indian-American friendship to a point where no such guarantee was necessary."

There has always been a mutual admiration and respect between AMERICANS n INDIANS.

During John F. Kennedy's period as President, he saw India as a strategic partner against the rise of communist China.

Today the 2 countries share excellent diplomatic relations and have huge business interests together...India has a strong dplomatic representation all across the USA with an embassy in Washington D.C. & Consulates in New York, Chicago, Houston n San Francisco. Thats the strongest Indian diplomatic representation in any country!!
USA too has an excellent diplomatic representation in India with an embassy in New Delhi and consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.

Today, the United States is India's largest trading partner.
  • In 2007, the United States exported $17.24 billion worth goods to India and imported $24.02 billion worth of Indian goods.
  • The United States is also India's largest investment partner, with American direct investment of $9 billion accounting for 9% of total foreign investment into India.
  • Circa 2010..USA considers India as a strategic partner in the region and also an upcoming superpower.
  • Indians students form the 2nd largest international students community in USA...
  • Majority of USA outsourcing business lands up in India...this has given Bangalore the moniker or 'Silicon Valley of the East'!!;)
